Experience:I worked as an English tutor for primary school students (ages 6-12), helping them build strong foundations in reading, writing, and language skills. My focus was on improving their vocabulary, reading comprehension, and basic writing skills, while also fostering a love for learning through creative and interactive lessons.
I helped students develop their ability to read and understand age-appropriate books, stories, and passages. I used questions, discussions, and activities to encourage them to identify main ideas, characters, and settings, and to retell stories in their own words.
Phonics and Vocabulary: I focused on building phonics skills, teaching students to sound out words and recognize sight words. I also introduced new vocabulary through flashcards, word games, and themed lessons to expand their language skills.
Creative Writing: I encouraged students to write simple stories, journal entries, and short descriptive paragraphs. We worked on sentence structure, punctuation, and using adjectives to add detail to their writing. My goal was to make writing fun by turning it into an enjoyable creative process.
Grammar and Sentence Structure: I taught basic grammar rules such as the proper use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and punctuation. I used fun exercises and worksheets to help students practice forming complete and grammatically correct sentences.
Spelling and Word Recognition: I ran weekly spelling drills and word recognition exercises, helping students improve their spelling through repetition and patterns.
Reading Aloud and Fluency: I encouraged students to read aloud during sessions, focusing on fluency, pronunciation, and expression. We worked on understanding punctuation and tone to make reading more engaging.
Approach:- Helped a student in grade 3 improve his reading fluency, moving from below-average to above-average reading levels within 6 months.
- Guided a student in grade 2 to write her first full story with a clear beginning, middle, and end, boosting her confidence and writing skills.
- Assisted several students in preparing for end-of-year exams, resulting in improved grades and better scores in spelling and reading comprehension.
- Tools and Resources Used:
- Interactive online platforms like Starfall and Reading Rockets to reinforce reading and phonics.
- Flashcards, spelling games, and visual aids to support vocabulary development.
- Printable worksheets and activity books for grammar and sentence-building practice.
