The graphic may be a Bar graph, Line graph, Pie chart, Table or Diagram — you will need to recognise the type of graphic and focus on the information it shows. Determine the Topic You need to read both the Graphic Title and the Description. This information will be used to write the opening sentence of your introduction (report). This sentence is known as your Topic Sentence. Making Comparisons In your graphic/s you will need to look for things you can compare. (Look for similarities and differences). Make an Outline This is a plan for what you will write. Start with your Topic and Comparisons (introduction), and then you will add all your supporting details that describe the comparisons (but not in depth). Do this all on the blank paper provided. Do it before you begin to write your task out. Exam I : Introduction Topic and Comparisons Comparison I The average cost of housing in rural, urban, and suburban areas Supporting detail 1 Average cost in rural areas 2 Average cost in urban areas 3 Average cost in suburban areas Comparison 2 The average cost of housing in 2005 and 2015 Supporting detail 1 Change in housing cost in rural areas 2 Change in housing cost in urban areas 3 Change in housing cost in suburban areas
  3. Introduction Body Your introduction will start with your "Topic sentence" which is your Topic followed by a summary of the "main ideas" you will discuss. The next sentence or two tells the reader what comparisons you will be making. In your body you need to write one paragraph for each of your comparisons mentioned in your introduction. You need to write one opening sentence for each paragraph which summarises the comparison. You then need to write one or two sentences for each supporting detail. Conclusion (overview) You MUST NOT write a conclusion for Task 1 You need to write what is called an OVERVIEW. The overview can be mentioned in your introduction or at the end of your body (report). It is a "General" statement of the comparisons found in the Graphic. NB!!! Do not write details in your overview. The details will go into the "body". PLEASE TAKE NOT!!! When it mentions "Conclusion" in your materials, change the word to "Overview"
