Who says disabled children cannot have fun? Well, gone are the days when children with impairments could not take a shot at leading a normal life – abound with fun, playfulness and fulfillment. In order for parents and teachers to be able to give children the opportunities to participate and enjoy outdoor games, an attitude fix is necessary first and foremost. One of the first things which need to be mentioned here is that children with disabilities are merely differently-abled, they are not less mortals.

  • Allowing impaired children to indulge in outdoor games is very important. It instills in them an improved sense of self-confidence, and cultivates in them the interests to venture outside and explore the outside world, nature, and surroundings on their own. Parents and teachers, on their part need to be supportive and forthcoming in fostering these habits and needs in children.

  • In popular psychological literature and research, it has been regularly stated that children with impairment will develop faster and learn to be self-dependent, especially if parents and teachers do not make them conscious of their physical limitations.

  • As a parent or teacher, if you really would like to see impaired children take their first step confidently in the outdoors, it is most important to constantly give them the pep-talk and motivation – that they are just as good and normal like the rest of us.

  • According to many specialists and doctors, outdoor play matters significant in any child’s life. Letting kids go in the outdoors facilitates personality development. As outdoor play has enabled them to become self-dependent, children will be inclined to do everyday tasks on their own or with as little assistance as possible.

Impaired children of different age groups can participate in different kinds of games and activities. Here are a few helpful ideas and suggestions which can be employed:

Toddlers: The most little ones are the most curious and keen to move around and explore their surroundings with the help of their physical skills. If you’re taking them outdoors, you can keep them engrossed in activities like: throw and chase the ball, wheeling, pulling, and pushing various kinds of movable toys and objects, walking, jumping, running around trees, blowing bubbles in the air and asking toddlers to go after them and get them back for you.

Preschoolers: This age group of kids is most fond of playing games or doing activities that involve around make-belief. Games like hide-n-seek, kick-to-kick, coloring art, climbing trees, crawling through tunnels etc are some options for them to consider.

If an impaired child is proactively invested in nature, parents and teachers should encourage them to follow habits like, observing different elements in the environment such as singing of birds, movement of tree leaves, watching water ripples, waves on the beach etc.

All of the aforesaid activities are essentially outdoor, and guaranteed to make impaired children feel alive and able despite their flaws.
