Mind maps are defined as a method of recording keywords, images, symbols and colors to represent ideas. It should start with a central theme that branches out, like a tree, to various contents. Different colors should be used in drawing a mind map, to show the connection among the symbols and images used. The map, when completed, will allow your thoughts to get manifested in such a way that reflects the entire picture in a single piece of paper.

Students, who are given tons of facts and figures, can use mind maps, so that they do not need to take down all the notes and information and remember them. Only the most important notes are needed to be written down and the students will visually make the connections between ideas and faces to make the thoughts and topics together.

If you were preparing for exams, you would want to ace it just like other students. Without a mind map, you would have to go back through the many pages of notes that you can’t seem to recall what most of them are about. However, you don’t have to be scared of exams and preparing for it. Just review each subject’s notes that you took down and draw a mind map incorporating the important information that should be remembered.

Drawing a mind map is something you can learn from apps and DVD’s that are offered in the market and you must use it as much as possible. Here are some guidelines about how to draw a mind map.

(1) Draw an image on the center of your paper (it should be in landscape, instead of portrait). You can also draw a circle or a square and put a keyword that focuses on the main issue of the mind map. For example, you may write down “preparing for exams” inside the center figure.

(2) From the center, you draw branches for the sub-topics. The points and substantial topics should be related to your central theme, so you write them down on these branches. Don’t worry if you do not have a good handwriting; what’s important is that you understand it or you can use block letters. For new areas, you can sketch a picture or draw geometric shapes. It’s okay if you want to do both.

(3) You will notice from the structure that the sub-topics become connected in a way that you did not realize at first. Continue making the associations; getting messy as you like. Just re-draw to make your mind map final.

(4) Start branching out into topics that are smaller, but related. Use pens of various colors to make the relationships known. It can also be powerful if you draw separate yet related topics. Your choice of keywords and the fact that they are direct to the point are what make the mind map work. It doesn’t need to be expanded, so don’t.

You don’t even need to be very good at drawing; your work just needs to be legible and clear to only you. So, when it comes to images, let your imaginations and thoughts go wild.

Mind map is one of the most effective tools that you can come across to ace your exams. It is not just a simple technique of note taking to record content, but it is also used to present these contents to prepare you for your exams and pass it. Topics inter-relate, this allows you not only to remember, but to understand the subject. Like the actual map, the mind map shows you not only a part of the subject, but its entirety, so you are sure where you should go next.
