As a writer in and teacher of the English language, I keep coming across people who wish to enhance their knowledge of and fluency in English; willing to spend the necessary money on this goal. Many of these people are not students but adults, and some of them are even quite established in their professions. There are some homemakers too, wishing they knew their English better – for various, very valid reasons. Let us pay attention to some of those reasons here, and see how it PAYS to invest money in learning English.

It goes without saying that English is a very important language and tool of communication, almost all over the world. It is also a medium of instruction at many places, and lack of the requisite knowledge of English can prove to be quite detrimental to progress, in many cases.

To share some personal experiences:

I have heard the Editor of a magazine lament that had he known English, he would have been doing much better in his profession.

A doctor had once confided that he found it difficult to communicate with people, due to his lack of fluency in English.

An actor needed someone to read out and interpret matter that appeared about him in English newspapers and magazines, as he believed his English was not as good as the journalists’ and he could not follow much of their expressions. He found it very embarrassing to have someone else read and explain the matter to him, and was often found regretting his lack of expertise in the language.

No wonder such people would be willing to not only make an effort to learn English, but also spend the requisite money on this important endeavour, which can fetch results that are profitable, even monetarily.

Better Job Opportunities

Knowing English well can get one better job opportunities. Let us see, how:

• Several people simply SHY AWAY from sending their job applications to organizations that they feel are ‘out of reach’ for them, just because these workplaces necessitate the use of English, meeting English speaking people and visiting foreign countries.
• Incorrect English used in a job application can rule out any chance of the applicant’s securing the job.
• Correct English can eventually improve an applicant or employee’s position at a place of work.
• If a person knows English and is confident about speaking and writing in it, s/he can work almost anywhere in the world, where English is used. Such might not be the scope for others who do not know English well enough.

• Correct use of English leads to correct, clear communication.
• Incorrect use of English might bring about misunderstandings and loss.
• It has been seen that on official and social occasions, people who do not know English well suffer from shyness, anxiety and the possibility of making a weak impression.

Knowing English can benefit people in the following ‘international’ ways:

• One can study at universities in countries where English is used as a medium of instruction and communication. This can lead to getting highly respectable and lucrative jobs.
• One can work at places abroad where English is used. This might increase the amount of money one earns, to a great extent.
• It helps one to know English well, if s/he needs to get medical treatment at a foreign land where English is used. It might get very difficult to communicate with the doctor/s or care-givers, otherwise.
• Travelling to and in foreign countries can get simpler if English is known to the traveller/s, as this is one language used by many people at various places of the world.

Better Social Opportunities

A lady had approached me once, to learn English. She revealed that she felt very embarrassed speaking to the friends of her husband and children, who spoke in English. This lady’s English was not too strong; and her husband and children could not find the time to help her improve it. It would increase her self-esteem and confidence to be able to surprise her family with her fluent English, someday, she hoped.

• It gets easier to make friends in foreign lands if one knows the major international language, English.
• Access to a lot of entertainment becomes easier if English is known to us, as there are many English books and movies that are known the world over as classics, that we can enjoy.

There is so much information on the Internet – in English – that we can gain access to and enhance our knowledge and career prospects, if we know English. There are certain news channels and papers that use English for communication, and are highly respected for their content. We can follow them if we follow English. There are various ways how it pays to invest money in learning English. The reason why parents are sending their children to English medium schools and even English classes, to teach them proper English. The reason why there are so many institutes and classes teaching English. The reason, also, why busy office goers are using English learning Apps to enhance their English.
